On Friday 25th June, not content with their previous conquests (including Arctic treksand Tour De France legs), three brave members of Freestyle’s development team set out to compete alongside 2,500 participants, at the Ironman triathlon in France.
Showing their true metal (mettle), Mark Kelly, Rob Ford and Alex McCormick battled the infinite 2.4 mile (3.8 km) swim, 112 mile (180 km) bike and 26.2 mile (42.2 km) run, to achieve something which most of us could only dream of, as we tucked into our barbequed burgers during one of the hottest weekends in memory.
The French Ironman takes place in Nice, well known for its sensational scenery and less so for its breathtaking inclines! The swim kicked off at 6.30am followed by a sprint to the bikes, with the second leg taking competitors on a circuit around 17 towns and villages spanning the local region. The third leg involved a marathon run over four laps along the Promenade des Anglais beach front, before finally crossing the finish line to fireworks and cheers from the huge number of spectators supporting those brave enough to take on the challenge.
We are still awaiting their official placements, but from the figures below, you can see they each achieved a spectacular feat and have earned the right to forever recite the original exhortation, handed out to the competitors of the first Ironman challenge back in 1978:
"Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag for the rest of your life"
